WASHINGTON, May 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's successful transnational higher education initiative led by private colleges and universities was featured at the International Education Summit held here on the occasion of the G8 summit, Deputy Director-General of Higher Education Datin Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir said here Sunday.

Dr Siti Hamisah, guest speaker at the Institute of International Education (IIE) seminar on the economic impact of higher education, explained to international educators and policy makers how Malaysia turned around the 1997 financial crisis, which almost crippled the nation's economy, to its advantage when the country sought creative ways to liberalise its higher education.

The long-term plan succeeded with Malaysia reducing its student population overseas; moving to twinning programmes with established universities; attracting international students to local Malaysian colleges; and now Malaysia's private colleges and universities venturing overseas to set up branches in India, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.

SERDANG, April 25 (Bernama) - Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says the government cannot implement the national education agenda on its own but need the involvement of stakeholders to achieve the status and high quality comparable to developed countries.

The deputy prime minister said that to achieve success, the cooperation within and outside schools, particularly the close relationship between schools and Parents Teachers Association (PTA), should always be enhanced.

"Since education today face challenges of globalisation, social phenomenon that is very challenging and aspirations to be achieved, concerted efforts must be made for changes in thinking and approach in line with needs and changes in education," he said at the inaugural National PTA 2011 awards ceremony with the theme 'PTA, The Catalyst Of 1Malaysia', here Wednesday.

PETALING JAYA: About 55% of Malaysian adults believe the education system here is comparable to developed countries, according to a survey by market research agency Introspek Asia.

Another 35% said it was even better than developed nations, said the survey which inter­­viewed 1,800 Malaysians over a one-month period ending Jan 15.

Citing the study, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Malaysian education system had assumed a crucial role in transforming the nation.

PUTRAJAYA, April 24 (Bernama) -- Beginning this year, award of scholarships will be based on the need for scholars to meet their bond obligations upon graduation, by securing employment either with the public sector or an approved private sector company in Malaysia, the prime minister said.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he was confident that with the move, the Public Service Department (JPA) and Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) would optimise on the nation's best and brightest, to ensure a strong pipeline of top scholars for the Government Transformation Plan (GTP) and Economic Transformation Plan (ETP).

The prime minister said this in his keynote address when launching TalentCorp's Talent Roadmap 2020 at Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), here Tuesday.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 (Bernama) -- The Education Ministry's Matriculation Division will announce the names of candidates for the matriculation programme 2011/2012 session on April 25.

In a statement today, the ministry said 2011 SPM-leavers (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) who applied before the Oct 10, 2011 closing date can check their results at the ministry's website www.moe.gov.my.

Registration for the programme will be held on May 28 and successful candidates are required to print and bring along their offer letter, registration guide, personal documents and student agreement form (two copies).
